The Transmitter was manufactured in the 1950s.

BC5 Solid State rectifier assemblies

Interior shot displays the high voltage rectifiers. The originals were 8008 mercury tube rectifiers. This transmitter has been equipped with solid state rectifier assemblies, which plug directly into the original tube sockets. Otherwise, Whrd's transmitter has its original complement of tubes.

WHRD Transmitter Building

Warren Kunkle revealed to me that a local water pumping station is closed by the Corp of Engineers 4 to 6 weeks a year. During this time, the tower is often covered with up to 10 feet of water. The radiation characteristics of the antenna of been only minimally affected and no major component failures have occurred which is fortunate, because the only way to the site is by boat during those times. The antenna base insulator is located 24 feet up the tower, along with the ATU to enable operation during flooding conditions.
